About Merlin Bingo

There’s a big problem in the world of online bingo and it could be enough to stop the industry from developing further should it be allowed to continue. While the number of people playing online bingo has gone up dramatically, we’re also seeing a dramatic rise in the number of generic bingo sites. There are far too many altogether bland and boring bingo sites popping up in 2016. Merlin Bingo is helping to buck the trend by showing that originality can still be found by showcasing how weird and wonderful online bingo can be. Being honest, the software might not be as up to snuff as other bingo sites; there is no denying that there is still a whole lot of fun to be found here, as Merlin Bingo appears to unleash plenty of magic.

If you were to talk to online bingo players and ask them what the industry needs a little more of right now the answer would likely be “magic”. Everyone is demanding higher amounts of creativity and Merlin Bingo have stepped away from the norm to deliver something of note in this department. Is the alternative nature of Merlin Bingo giving bingo players the new experience they so desperately need? As they say, there really is only one way to find out, so we recommend you keep reading!

When you visit Merlin Bingo

As we mentioned before Merlin Bingo is a little different from all the other bingo sites out there. Merlin Bingo is a true alternative and it comes through right from the start as soon as you load the site up. The UI of the website is something that’s never really been seen before. The first thing you’ll see when you open up the website is a whole lot of purple. There are some splashes of gold thrown in to show you that there is a lot of colour here. It’s bright and boisterous but avoids being overbearing. It’s easy to make your way around the site thanks to the simple navigational tools too. A scrolling banner at the top of the page keeps players up to date with the “Bingo schedule” and below that is where you can find all the games.

The bright colours are definitely a refreshing change from the norm and the Merlin Bingo developers deserve some praise for their design efforts in that regard.

Game Selection at Merlin Bingo

Continuing to step away from the norm Merlin Bingo has swapped out the old bingo hall feel and gone with something a little different. Their something different is offering players variation and more choice than any many other bingo sites around. Players can go from the bingo lobby to playing games such as the Classic 90-ball bingo, US 75-ball bingo, and 30-ball speed bingo in no time at all. Each game gives players a unique experience too. To keep the balls rolling Merlin Bingo aim to keep the bingo games at hand balanced, so that games never feel too full or too empty.

As you’d expect, the main draw of Merlin Bingo is, well, online bingo. Even so they do go a little further than offering just this. If you feel like you need a little break from the bingo then you can play some slot machines instead, with hundreds of machines on offer and some other instant play games thrown into the mix for good measure. While many Bingo websites stick to what they know, Merlin Bingo are happy to step out of their comfort zone. It’s not quite the full “online casino” experience, but it’s about as close as a bingo site can get these days considering current technological limitations.

Merlin Bingo Bonuses and Free Bingo

One of the main challenges facing online bingo players is getting started, because as we know those first few steps are always the toughest. There are some bingo sites that are nowhere near as welcoming as they should be. Merlin Bingo also gets away from this trend by offering their players a £10 no deposit bingo bonus as soon as they sign up. This £10 no strings attached bonus is definitely a welcoming gesture. The registration process itself is pretty simple and certainly has you playing bingo right away. It’s hard to find a website as warm and welcoming as this, with the free bingo introductory offering doing a fantastic job of setting the tone.

If you’re interested in big bonuses and additional free bingo, then Merlin Bingo has what you need. On your first deposit, you can deposit £10 and turn it in to £40. They will match your first deposit with 300% extra in bonus cash, and you can get as much as £120 in bonuses through this offer.

On top of all these bonuses Merlin Bingo also run a “Daily Raffle” encouraging players to login and deposit each day. Every deposit you make in a day is equal to one raffle ticket. The more times you deposit the more chances you have of winning the Merlin Bingo Daily Raffle, which often tops out at a whopping five-figures.

Mobile Bingo at Merlin Bingo

Mobile bingo is becoming more popular each day. Because this is the case, Merlin Bingo made sure to get ahead of the curve by developing their very own mobile bingo platform, and it doesn’t disappoint. Since launch they’ve managed to improve their mobile platform more and more as time has gone by. While it seems that other websites are struggling to develop mobile platforms, Merlin Bingo have always been ahead of the game in that department. Their mobile platform is user-friendly and works great on all mobile platforms. Arguably, it is this mobile offering alone that helps set Merlin Bingo apart from other rival bingo sites.

FAQs

Merlin Bingo

Got questions? No worries, we’re gonna do our best to answer them here!

What’s a bingo?

Picture a five by five grid. Imagine each of the squares in the grid has a different prompt in it. That’s your bingo card, and you can cross off a square by creating a fanwork based on the prompt.

Sounds cool, how do I get a card?

Easy! You just need to fill it out this form!

Merlin Bingham Swire

The form will ask for your email address, the name you want to appear on your bingo card, and a few details about what kind of prompts you might want on your card.

What type of prompts can I expect?

You can select any or all of the following categories for your card:

  • AUs
  • Fluff prompts
  • Angst prompts
  • Relationships between characters
  • Characters
  • NSFW prompts (must be over 18 to request these)

I really don’t want X, Y, and Z. How can I be sure I won’t get them on my bingo card?

Don’t worry, we’ve all got things like this! There’s a place on the sign up form to say if there’s anything you can’t/don’t want to create content for, so you can list those things (without telling us why, because it’s no one’s business but your own why you don’t want certain things on your card) and these things won’t appear on your bingo card.

I signed up, but I haven’t got my card yet. When can I expect it?

Due to life being an unavoidable nuisance sometimes, it could take up to a week for you to get your card.

However, the sign up form is set up so you get an email when you complete it, so as long as you’ve got this your sign up has definitely gone through and you’ll get your card ASAP.

If you’ve not got the automatic email 24 hours after signing up (and it’s definitely not in your junk, because some email accounts can be overzealous about google forms), please let us know and we’ll see if we can locate your sign up.

I’ve got my card and there’s things on it I didn’t think to say I didn’t want when I signed up. What do I do?

Disaster

Don’t worry about it. Just reply back to the card email listing up to ten squares that don’t work for you, and we’ll replace them with new ones!

Merlin Bingo

Can I combine multiple squares into one work?

That’s about the only question we’re going to answer with sorry, no. One fanwork = one square crossed off.

The exception to this rule is multi-chapter works, where you can use each chapter to fill a different square.

Can I use a work for another event to cross off a bingo square?

Yes! We love crossposting, and you are absolutely allowed to do it, just as long as:

  • The other event is okay with it as well – some might not be.
  • Your fill meets the minimum requirements for all events you’re using it for added together.

Is there a list of events that are okay with crossposting?

Merlin Bingo Card

So far, tavernfest and merlin-wat-game have confirmed they’re okay with crossposting.

If you mod a fandom event and are cool with it, please let us know and we’ll add you to this list.

Can I repost old works?

Nope, sorry: anything posted for this event needs to be shiny and new.

Do I have to fill all my squares?

You can make as many or as few fills as you want. Whether it’s one, five, ten, or the whole card, that’s awesome! There is zero pressure here.

Okay, but what if I do fill all my squares?

First up, great job!! Massive kudos to you!!!

If you blackout your first card but want to keep creating, you can request a second card! Just fill out the sign up form again, let us know that you’re requesting a second card, and we’ll get it sent out to you ASAP!

Blackout a second card too? Ask for a third one!

What do I get for making fills?

At the moment, we plan on having personalised badges for participation (filling one square), bingo (five squares in a line - horizontal, vertical or diagonal - or all four corners and the centre square) and blackout (all twenty-five squares). Maybe a few others, we’ll see how it goes…

What can I create for this event?

You can create almost anything you want to. The minimum requirements for each format are here:

  • Fic and poetry: 300 words, unless you are specifically writing a drabble (exactly 100 words on ao3)
  • Art: 300x300 pixels if digital, 3”x3” if traditional
  • Moodboards: five images + blurb/summary
  • Playlists: eight songs + cover art
  • Rec lists: three fanworks + reasons why you’re reccing them
  • Podfic: ten minutes + clear permission from the author for you to use it for the bingo
  • Translations: the work it’s a translation of must fit the fic minimum requirements, whether it’s a new or a translation of an old one + clear permission from the author for you to use it for the bingo
  • Fanvids: 30 seconds
  • All other fanworks (gifs, crafts, baked goods, edits, manips, anything else you can think of): as long as you think it’s complete and/or the best you can do right now, it counts!

Still not sure if what you want to create counts? You can always ask us!

Can I write in another language?

Absolutely!! Whether it’s because you want to try writing in a language you’ve been learning or because English isn’t your first language, we welcome non-English works.

Can I collaborate with someone else?

Yes! If you want to create with a friend (or acquaintance or arch-enemy, though we probably recommend against that one), you should feel free!

And if your collaborator is participating in the bingo as well, they can also use the collab to cross off a square (better yet, it doesn’t even have to be the same square).

There is one caveat to this: each collaborator has to meet the minimum requirements (your fic has to be at least 600 words if there’s two authors collabing, 900 if there’s three, etc)

Where do I post my fills?

Ao3, tumblr, LJ or absolutely anywhere else you like!

If you post here on tumblr, please tag us @merlinbingo. If you’re posting on ao3, you can add your work to our Merlin Bingo collection.

We’ll signal boost any and all works created for this bingo, as long as we know they exist, which leads in nicely to our next question…

Is there any information I need to include in my post?

Not on the post itself, but there is this quick google form to complete so that your fill definitely gets logged and you definitely get any badges you’ve earned.

This form will ask for:

  • Your card number (at the top right of your bingo card)
  • Your username
  • The title of your fill
  • A link to your fill
  • The letter-number combo for the square you’ve filled (eg M1, G3, C5)
  • The rating
  • Which archive warning(s) your work would have on ao3 (eg MCD, graphic violence, no archive warnings apply)
  • Any ships or characters that feature in your fan work
  • A short summary of your work

My question isn’t answered here! What do I do?

You can send us an ask on tumblr (anon, if that’s how you roll), or email us at merlinmodsbingo@gmail.com.
